Trusted Journalist Claims 8.5M Turkish Wonderkid Is Being “Coveted” By Arsenal

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain could compete with Ajax for the signature of Trabzonspor centre-back Ahmetcan Kaplan, according to De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij.

The reliable Dutch journalist claims that Ajax are lining up the Turkish Under 21 international as a replacement for the departing Perr Schurrs, but they could have to battle teams like the Gunners, who have also been watching the player’s development:

“Certainly for a boy who has played nine (sic) matches in the first [team for] Trabzonspor. Only he is also coveted by Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. There are big clubs that prey on him. Ajax have had him [on the radar] for quite a while… They really want this player. He seems to be a great talent.”

Arsenal have been looking for a left-footed centre-half since January, when they failed in their attempt to sign Nico Schlotterbeck from Freiburg. Kaplan would certainly fit the profile of what the club are looking for.

At 19 years of age, he also has scope to develop and wouldn’t be demanding to play week in, week out, which would be a major plus, considering the competition for places in the middle of defence.

Reports suggest that Ajax are already in talks to secure Kaplan’s services, who could cost €10m (£18.5m), so the Gunners may have to move fast if they want to sign the defender.
