Arsenal new boy Lucas Torreira has revealed that he received a surprise phone call from Unai Emery before the World Cup kicked off.

The 22-year-old signed for Arsenal this week in a £26million move, making him the Gunners’ fourth signing of the summer.

It was already heavily rumoured that a deal was close to completion, but any official announcements and proceedings were not made until after Uruguay’s World Cup had finished.

But Torreira has revealed that Emery was very keen on bringing the midfielder to the Emirates, so much so that he called him up just before the start of Uruguay’s campaign in Russia.

And the youngster admits he was ‘nervous’ about talking to his new boss.

“When he called me, I could not believe it,” Torreira told Ovacion.

“I was in a hotel with a friend, and I got nervous.

“It was difficult for me to talk because receiving the call from a coach of such an important team generates many things.

“We spoke about several things.

“He also did not want to fill my head with a lot of things because I knew the World Cup was coming and that I was focused on that.”
