Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira has played down fears that he suffered a serious ankle injury in the win over Portsmouth last night.
The Uruguayan international was stretchered off just 17 minutes into the FA Cup tie at Fratton Park following a challenge from James Bolton, but speaking after the match, the 24-year-old said that while he twisted his ankle, he was still able to move it freely:
“I wanted to tap it and he grabbed my ankle on the outside. It twisted me, but I can move it. I’m fine.”
Head coach Mikel Arteta raised concerns after the game that Torreira could be out for a while. The midfielder’s leg was put in a brace following the match, and a scan on the ankle will be needed to see if he has damaged ligaments or fractured a bone.
The Uruguayan’s more optimistic comments do suggest, however, that he will be out for a matter of weeks, instead of months, which Arsenal fans will take heart from considering he is an important member of the first-team squad.
