Top-four finish is Arsenal’s to lose after return to form

Arsenal bounced back from a woeful sequence of results on Wednesday night with a comfortable 3-0 victory over West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium, which came alongside some handy results for the Gunners elsewhere. Perhaps more importantly the Gunners looked like a cohesive unit who were playing for their manager with their signature intricate passing and movement which culminated in some sweet goals which had Arsene Wenger smiling for the first time in a while.

Manchester United and Liverpool both dropped points in midweek, drawing to Everton and Bournemouth respectively, whilst league leaders Chelsea defeated Manchester City at Stamford Bridge- putting Arsenal back in a strong position in the race for a top-four finish.

As things stand, Arsenal are four points behind Manchester City, with a game in hand, and six points behind Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool- with the Gunners having two games in hand when compared to the Reds.

Those fixtures, which come against Southampton and Leicester, would put the Gunners level with Liverpool if they were to win both matches and Arsene Wenger’s side could move into the top-four on goal difference.

With nine games left to play in the Premier League, Arsenal’s fate is very much in their own hands although they are likely to require their rivals dropping more points- but that is something that looks likely.

Manchester United, now below the Gunners once again in sixth, have struggled to find wins this season and still face a huge test in the remaining weeks of the season; as they face the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have completed their schedule of fixtures against the top sides in the Premier League but the club’s five defeats this season have all come against sides in the bottom-half of the table- so it’s easy to see the Reds dropping further points.

Manchester City, meanwhile, still have Manchester United to face and Arsenal have a favourable run of fixtures between now and the end of April, before huge tests against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

By that stage, Arsenal will hope to have established themselves back in the top-four and have another season of Champions League football within their grasp- which will be crucial to their plans of restructuring this summer, as it will allow them to attract big signings.

With the Gunners also having to face Manchester City in a FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, Wenger’s side still have a big chance of ending the season on the back of success and lifting that trophy, as well as securing their place in the top-four, is something many sides would have bitten your hand off for at the start of the campaign.

Arsenal’s poor run over recent months has hit them hard but, thankfully, the Gunners now seem to be finding their feet at a crucial stage of the season and will fancy their chances of kicking off a winning run in the coming weeks as they’re set to tackle Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough.

Two victories there should put Arsenal right back in it and the Gunners have a strong record of finishing the season in fine form, which they will be aiming to do once again in the final two months of the campaign.
