Arsenal legend Tony Adams believes the Gunners only need to sign a new goalkeeper and a new number 10 to become title contenders once again.
The ex-Gunners captain was pleased with his former club’s performance in the 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, and he has been suitably impressed with how manager Mikel Arteta has strengthened the defence and midfield with the signings of Gabriel and Thomas Partey. However, he feels replacements for Bernd Leno and Mesut Ozil will be needed for them to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City:
“I think they’re just missing a goalkeeper and maybe another No.10 to be champions. But there were great, great signs today, we’ve got another couple of leaders now in central defence and central midfield, so, top six, we’re getting closer.”
Adams’ previous comments on Bernd Leno mean his suggestion to upgrade the keeper is not a surprise but the German has made a number of important saves this season, albeit with a couple of mistakes thrown in.
More Arsenal supporters would back his recommendation to bring in a new playmaker, though. The Gunners have struggled to score goals this campaign and adding more creativity will certainly be a priority for Arteta in upcoming transfer windows.
