Three Major Attacking Threats That Arsenal Must Look Out For Against Valencia

Valencia are a defence minded team and you can bet that they will come with a game plan tomorrow to nullify Arsenal at the Emirates.

In La Liga this season, manager Marcelino has overseen 16 draws in 35 matches, conceding 32 goals and scoring just 40.

However, Valencia have been a different animal in Europe, more specifically since they dropped down from the Champions League for the Europa League knockout rounds.

In the last 32, they won 2-0 away at Celtic, while in the quarter-final they scored three away goals against Villarreal. With the Gunners’ poor defensive record, manager Unai Emery will, therefore, be very mindful of the threat Valencia pose on the counter-attack.

So who should Arsenal be worried about tomorrow evening?

Carlos Soler

The 22-year-old has created ten goals in all competitions from the right wing this season, and although he hasn’t made much of a mark in the Europa League, his two goals and three assists in the Champions League group stages show he is a difficult opponent.

Emery will have to weigh up whether a 3-5-2 formation (his favoured system in Europe) will be suitable to cover Soler. Sead Kolasinac may have his work cut out if Valencia allow the winger the freedom to go forward.

Goncalo Guedes

Injuries meant the Portuguese starlet had a difficult first half of the season, but the midfielder has been in red-hot form since the beginning of March.

Guedes scored twice in the 3-1 away win against Villarreal in the last round, as well as getting on the scoresheet in the last 16 second leg draw versus Krasnodar in Russia.

Marcelino generally deploys him from the left-hand side but he also enjoys playing in the number 10 role so Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka will have to marshall him carefully tomorrow.

Rodrigo

A regular for Spain at international level, the Brazilian born forward isn’t the most prolific in front of goal (having scored 11 in all competitions this campaign) but he is a willing runner.

Rodrigo will pounce on any mistake made by the Gunners defence, and considering the number of errors that Arsenal’s backline have made in recent games, that has to be a major concern.

One positive is that the 28-year-old has been enduring a goal drought. He hasn’t scored since bagging a double against Krasnodar in the 2-1 home win back in early March. His barren spell has now lasted nine games in all competitions.
