‘The only positive is that we are through’ says Arsenal midfielder after shambolic Europa League display

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says his side were “nowhere near good enough” following their Europa League defeat to Ostersunds last night, and insists the only positive the Gunners can take from the game is their qualification for the next round.

It was another night to forget at The Emirates as Arsene Wenger’s side were humbled 2-1 by the Swedish outfit.

Two goals within a minute for the visitors from Hosam Aiesh and Ken Sema gave Ostersunds a comfortable half-time lead. Sead Kolasinac pulled one back shortly after the break, but Graham Potter’s side held-on for a memorable win in North London.

Having won the first leg 3-0 away from home however, Arsenal still managed to qualify for the last-16 to keep alive their dreams of winning the competition as route to next season’s Champions League.

And Wilshere, who played 75 minutes of the tie at The Emirates, says going through is the only consolation for what was a desperately poor performance on the night.

“We were nowhere near good enough,” said the Englishman, “We improved a little bit in the second half but it still wasn’t good enough.

“We’re through and as you said, that’s all that counts. We’ll see who we get tomorrow and then we’ve got a big game on Sunday so we’ve got to refocus now on that.”

While not looking for excuses, Wilshere says the Gunners big lead from the first leg was perhaps a factor in the defeat.

Goals from Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil either side of a Sotirios Papagiannopoulos own-goal set up the Gunners for what looked like a sure ticket through the next round, however Wilshere says the lead may have led to a spot of complacency within the camp.

“When you are 3-0 up in a two-legged game, you still have to go again,” he said.

We know it’s only half-time, we know what quality they want to play with and maybe we underestimated them a little bit. But the main thing is, we’re through. We weren’t good enough though. We’ll accept that and move on.

“We’re through, so that’s probably the only positive.”
