Along with a striker, signing a player to strengthen the club’s options in midfield is a key part of Arsenal’s summer transfer plans.

Manager Mikel Arteta had to rely heavily on Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey last season, and when the latter got injured in the closing weeks of the campaign, the Gunners’ top-four challenge faltered badly.

It could be argued that the London club should be pursuing at least two central midfield players but the contract renewal for Mohamed Elneny means that is now unlikely. At least one signing is, though, expected in the middle of the park.
