Swiss international praised for rejecting Arsenal this summer … by former Gunners star

Switzerland international Denis Zakaria was right to reject a move to Arsenal in the summer of 2017.

That’s according to former Gunners right-back Alex Scott.

Zakaria stepped out for the Swiss last night during their 1-0 defeat to England at the King Power Stadium – a game Scott was on hand for as a pundit for Sky Sports.

Scott was discussing the future of England star Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who remained at Chelsea during the summer despite interest from Crystal Palace and Schalke.

The 22-year-old spent last season on-loan with Palace, where his form earned him a call-up to the World Cup, however he has struggled to establish himself as a regular at Stamford Bridge in the early etching’s of the season.

And Scott suggested Loftus-Cheek could have taken a leaf out of the book of Zakaria – who turned down Arsenal and Liverpool for Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017 – by moving onto a smaller team.

“A footballer’s career is so short,” Scott said, “You don’t want to look back with regrets.

” He (Loftus-Cheek) could have gone on loan earlier to Crystal Palace, got more game time.

“He would have been maybe playing more for the national team and got in there. I think you’re right, it does come down to the player some time.

“Actually when you look at the Swiss team, the young guy, 21, Zakaria, he turned down moves to Arsenal and Liverpool because he said he did not want to be sitting on the bench.

“He wanted to make sure he was playing week in, week out.”

England beat Switzerland 1-0 thanks to a solitary second-half goal from Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.
