Spurs not the best team in North London, says Cech

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech insists that North London rivals Spurs are not close to topping his club’s achievements, saying that trophies are the tell tale sign of success.

Tottenham have been superb in recent years, and many have suggested that there has been a power shift in North London, meaning that Arsenal are chasing after Spurs in terms of stature.

Tottenham have won just two League Cup’s since Arsene Wenger took over, but finished above Arsenal in last season’s Premier League. This season they look equally strong, with Pochettino’s side having a 4 point lead over Arsenal so far this campaign.

However, Cech has dismissed claims that Spurs are now the best team in North London, saying that trophies are the measure of success.

Asked if there had been a power shift, Cech said: “No. I don’t think so. There is always one odd year where things can change. They’ve been there in the last few years so now I think they have to make sure they win something to show the progression. They have young, talented players as well as experienced players. Their team is very well balanced. There was always something missing but I would say the difference was when Pochettino came.

“Success is ultimately winning trophies. We were under pressure the last couple of years, people talking about winning trophies, obviously we are disappointed not to have won the title but we won FA Cups. Although the season was not always what we wanted, we always had a trophy at the end of it.

“The most important thing for us is competing against the other teams for the Premier League title and for the glory.

“We are not competing against Tottenham Hotspur. Two years ago when we finished above them we were disappointed because we didn’t win the title. Our target is to win the title.”

Cech also commented on the future’s of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, with the pair still unlikely to sign new deal’s despite their contracts expiring in the summer.

“As a team we feel that – although there is a lot of speculation, their contracts are different to everyone else’s – you can see they are committed,” he said.
