RB Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche says he his determined that Dayot Upamecano won’t leave on a free transfer at the end of next season.
The France Under 21 international’s current contract expires in 2021, but it appears a decision on the player’s future will be made one way or another this summer. Krosche said:
“We are very happy with Upamecano. Our goal is of course very clear that we will not let any top performers move free of charge.”
It is believed that Leipzig would like to extend Upamecano’s contract to give themselves more breathing room in terms of the 21-year-old’s sale.
The centre-back does have a €60m (£53m) release clause but it is very unlikely that any club will trigger it due to the current economic situation.
Arsenal, along with Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City have been mentioned as possible destinations for Upamecano, while Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also said to be interested.
The Gunners will be hoping that the defender holds out for a move, and they can secure him for a cut-price deal when the transfer window reopens.
