Spanish Striker Still Wants To Play In England – But Where?

The Spanish international, Álvaro Negredo, known as “The beast of Vallecas” has been a sensation at Sevilla since joining from Almeira back in 2009. He slotted into the team well from the start and has scored 74 goals for the club in all competitions in 168 appearances. He is enjoying yet another fruitful season in front of goal, as he has already found the back of the net on 20 occasions this season in only 30 appearances.

A regular face in the Spanish national team squad, the 27-year old has been previously linked to a move to England although nothing ever started to take serious shape. He was linked with a January move to Arsenal, and Negredo revealed that Sevilla refused to sell him in the middle of the season. He spoke exclusively to talkSPORT and said, “The president received an offer in January but he didn’t look at it.”

“They never said anything directly to me and it wasn’t time to leave. I don’t know what will happen in the future. It depends on what the club wants and what it needs.”

Given his numerous links with a host of English sides, he was asked whether he still desired to play in England one day, to which he replied that he was still hopeful of playing there. He said, “I’ve always said it and I’ve never tried to keep it hidden,”

“The Premier League is a league that I like. I don’t know if it’s now, maybe a bit later, or tomorrow, but I will play there.”

With Negredo issuing an indirect ‘come-and-get-me’ plea to English clubs, it now remains to be seen which of them will actually pursue him in the summer.

Arsenal possibly could pursue him, given their need to add a striker for next season. Tottenham too are in need of reinforcements for the inconsistent Emmanuel Adebayor and the injury-prone Jermain Defoe. With Chelsea’s Fernando Torres still struggling for form, the Blues could possibly be interested too.

This story has the potential of making headlines in the summer transfer window and we will bring you any developments on it as and when they happen. Negredo must be considered an interesting candidate for the Gunners as he is a natural goal scorer with almost a goal every 2 games which is a good goals to games ratio and would provide the Gunners with a genuine finisher in the prime of his career. Wenger has done business with Sevilla before on the Reyes deal, so you can see the two teams coming together for a transfer again. We shall see…
