Southampton 0 – 5 Arsenal: Match Report

What a game Arsenal had on Saturday. The Gunners dominated the Saints and gave them absolutely no chance whatsoever. Despite featuring players like Holding, Matiland0Niels, Adelaide and Perez, Wenger somehow managed to prepare this FA Cup confrontation so well that nothing could have gone wrong.

A flash attack from the Londoners in the beginning of the first half saw Welbeck alone with Lewis who stood no chance against an impeccable lob finish. Lucas Perez should be attributed at least 50% of the goal though as his deviation gave the England striker all the time in the world to score. Even though in the end Arsenal had another player score a hat-trick, it was Welbeck who shined. A long pass from Oxlade-Chamberlain tested the English international’s ball control but it was for the best. Arsenal went 2-0 ahead after Welbeck got the ball through Lewis’ legs and reminded fans how much the team missed his speed and clinical finishing.

He continued on to provide the assist for Walcott’s first goal of the night. Again, Welbeck used his speed and quick touches to serve his fellow compatriot perfectly. Lucas Perez also needs to be credited for this goal as he was the one who provided Welbeck with the chance to assist Walcott.

Sanchez took the lead after that in terms of assists and provided Theo Walcott with another two great passes that allowed the Englishman to complete his hat-trick.

What we’ve learned?

Welbeck is an amazing striker who reminded everyone why growing up as a no.9 does make a difference. He is clinical in front of goal, he is fast and efficient with the ball. He doesn’t need that many touches to finish or to provide an assist and he can outrun most of his adversaries or leave them behind.

Lucas Perez is looking more and more like the perfect second striker. His one touch passes and quick thinking changed the game.

Walcott can challenge Sanchez for the title of Arsenal’s best scorer.

Sanchez needs to be the best regardless of the game. You could see him fight and get mad for losing a ball with 10 minutes to go and the game already won.

Arsenal passed the no-Wenger test. The Frenchman proved that he can organize the team excellently even though he was not on the bench.

The Gunners welcome Watford on the 31st and then head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea and hopefully get back some of the points they are behind Conte’s side by.
