Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira was an unused substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Monday. The Uruguayan international has only started two Premier League games this season under manager Unai Emery.
After making 50 appearances last campaign, supporters on Twitter can’t understand why the midfielder has been overlooked by the Gunners boss so far this season:
Winds me up so much, he’s so much better than Xhaka

My man is the best DM we have, yet Emery plays him out of position or puts him on the bench. #emeryoutnow pic.twitter.com/DgmZwxmdk0

I think if @LTorreira34 doesn't start on Sunday we should sing his name every 11mins to try get our point heard

Torreira is essential to Arsenal.
Emery has to go.— Main Man Bellerín (@Arsenal_HB2) October 22, 2019
I don’t understand ooo

Absurd step by emery

I don't think you'll find many Arsenal fans disagreeing. The boy is a warrior and if used correctly, massively improves our side.

Thats true… Guendouzi is good but needs to be rotated with torreira atleast 2 epl matches in a month

AGREED. We were waiting for a warrior in midfield all these years and now he sits on bench.

Very correct. Torreira showed great potential as a 6 but is still in his formative years and is yet to master the position. While the poor tactical setup at Arsenal already made this progression difficult, it is doubled by being denied experience in the role. Wasting time @ AFC

No. Emery has to go. Lucas stays.

Torreira’s dynamism in midfield has certainly been missed this campaign, but it appears that the emergence of Matteo Guendouzi has resulted in the Uruguayan getting fewer chances to impress.
Some would say that the 23-year-old should replace Granit Xhaka in the side instead but that is unlikely to happen considering the Swiss midfielder is club captain.
Fans should see Torreira in action tomorrow night when Emery rings the changes for Arsenal’s Europa League game against Vitoria Guimaraes. Perhaps the combative midfielder will do enough to persuade Emery he is deserving of inclusion for the match versus Crystal Palace at the weekend.
