Newcastle are “interested” in Leeds winger Raphinha but they are unlikely to be the Arsenal target’s favoured destination, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The reliable journalist believes that the Brazilian international has loftier ambitions, with Barcelona still thought to be the player’s preferred club:

“I think he’s definitely a player they’re interested in, but I think the best way of putting this is I think he’s probably setting his sights a little bit higher, with all due respect to Newcastle. I think Barcelona have made it pretty clear that they’re interested in him; I think that’s the sort of move he’d be up for.”

With Barca unlikely to be able to match Raphinha’s £65m price tag, though, many believe it does give Arsenal a good chance of securing the 25-year-old’s signature.

In addition to Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham are also in the mix for the Brazilian but the two London rivals are said to be prioritising moves for other players at the moment.

It means the Gunners do have a window of opportunity to secure Raphinha’s services. Technical director Edu is believed to have set up more talks this week, after having their first bid knocked back for the winger, and it will be hoped an agreement can be reached.
