Signs are good for Arsenal after Community Shield victory

It may not be the biggest trophy available this season but Arsenal got their campaign off to the ideal start with a victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield, which saw the Gunners lift the trophy for the third time in four years.

The Gunners needed a penalty shoot-out to advance past Antonio Conte’s Premier League champions, having fallen behind to Victor Moses goal, but a red card to Pedro Rodriguez and a debut goal from Sead Kolasinac saw the game turn on it’s head.

Theo Walcott, Nacho Monreal, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud all dispatched their penalties in the shoot-out to seal a victory for Arsenal, five days before Arsene Wenger’s side commence the new Premier League season by hosting Leicester City.

The most significant part of the result was certainly how well Arsenal performed without a wealth of their top players, as Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey were all not in the squad.

Arsenal also lost Per Mertesacker to injury in the first-half, which saw Kolasinac enter the frame playing out of his natural position and moving Monreal into the middle of a back-three, but the Gunners shone.

Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck both looked bright, which will be crucial heading into the new season as Arsenal need competitiveness within their squad and the ability to rotate due to their involvement in the Europa League, whilst Oxlade-Chamberlain and Hector Bellerin also impressed at wing-back.

Mohamed Elneny was also a force to be reckoned with in midfield and Granit Xhaka, who provided the assist for Kolasinac’s equaliser, put in the best performance of his Arsenal career so far and showed the leadership qualities to suggest he could be a captain for the club in the future.

With such a strong side and top-class players still to return to the set-up, Arsenal are certainly in a decent position ahead of the new campaign and the need to strengthen further in the remainder of the transfer window doesn’t stand out as a necessity.

We’re now days away from the start of the Premier League season and a huge debate will orientate around what Arsenal’s best XI truly is and Wenger has a huge selection headache on his hands- which is always a nice problem to have.
