Should Wenger Target Liverpool’s Daniel Agger?

Arsene Wenger has sold another of his club captains to Barcelona this summer. Thomas Vermaelen joins the likes of Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas who swapped life at the Emirates for Nou Camp.

The £15 million sale of Vermaelen has left the Gunners light in the centre-back department. They have the formidable duo of Laurient Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as their first-choice centre-back pairing but they lack quality defenders apart from the duo.

Wenger has already vowed to bring in a replacement and the sale of Vermaelen has prompted a flurry of defenders being linked with Arsenal. One player who would be a quality addition to Arsenal’s ranks and is in a position to join the Gunners is Agger, who has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has spent £20 million on Dejan Lovren and Agger will have to fight for his place alongside Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, amongst others for a place in Liverpool’s first-team.

The Frenchman has already hinted at a move for Agger, according to the Express. The boss said about the outgoing captain, “Vermaelen behaved outstandingly last year – I am grateful for him and I wish him very well. If I can find another centre-back I will do it. You make your position with your performances.”
