Should Wenger Pursue Europe’s Top Strikers?

Leaving aside injuries and issues of a psychological nature, Arsenal have a major issue they need to address. Since the departure of Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie, the Gunners haven’t had a player become the top scorer in the Premier League. It’s so complicated to actually win something without having the best at something. Sure, having a strong group and a strong defense are two things that could take you very far, but you still need that top striker to take you over the edge. Looking at the Premier League teams that are on top you can see that every squad has a striker anyone could name, even if they are not into football that much. City has Aguero, Tottenham has Kane, Chelsea has Costa, Manchster has Rooney, all players who can easily score 20+ goals in a season. Arsenal has Giroud who has yet to reach the 20-goal mark. There’s also Welbeck but he has been injured most of the season. There’s no spark there though, no player to compete for the Golden Boot.

Maybe that could change this summer. Even though all sections of the team need improvements, the attack seems like the most likely to get a boost this summer. Wenger created a pattern in signing one star-quality player every summer so fingers crossed for this transfer window.

There are three players who have what it takes to make it and who could be interested in a move to Arsenal. Even though all are incredibly expensive, they all have that certain “something” that could help Wenger win the Premier League.

First and probably the most lethal on the list is Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. The Frenchman has an incredible record managing to score once every two games for both Real and OL. Not only that but he also totals over 100 assists. He is tough, he has the experience and he hasn’t gone under the 20 goal benchmark in almost 6 years. The Frenchman has averaged around 23 goals and 12 assists per season for the past 5 years which is incredible. This guy should be a no-brainer for Wenger if he gets the chance to steal him. Benzema is now valued at £50million but he is worth every penny.

Then there’s former Chelsea man Romelu Lukaku. Even if he is only 22, he is already averaging a goal every two games which is also amazing considering he has almost 250 Premier League games. This season he has scored 25 goals and made 6 assists which is twice as much as Giroud. The Belgium international is also very expensive but again worth every penny. He is young, experienced and efficient so why not pay £50million+ for his services?

Last but not least there’s the Barcelona killer, Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid. Since moved up front, the Frenchman has scored every two games. This season he found the net 29 times and provided 6 assists. Even though he started out as a winger he is now quite efficient as a striker. He is young, experienced and would fit in beautifully at Arsenal. He is valued at pretty much the same price as the other two.

Will Wenger make such a move? We are going to have to wait and see if such a move happens.
