Shearer Praises “Magnificent” Arsenal Ace Who Masterminded Team’s Comeback Against Villa

Alan Shearer believes Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi was key to the team’s comeback against Aston Villa yesterday.

The Gunners went down to ten men in the first half after Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off for two bookable offences, but the home side rallied in the second half to come from 2-1 down to win 3-2. Shearer says they couldn’t have done it without Guendouzi:

“It started from Guendouzi, he was magnificent. They needed a warrior and he stood up. We have questioned Arsenal’s character so we have to give them praise when they do well.”

Guendouzi won the penalty to get the game back to 1-1 just before the hour mark with a trademark driving run into the box. The Frenchman’s desire to get on the ball (as well as his consistently excellent passing) have been one of the standouts of the season so far.

The 20-year-old has been in excellent form and was also superb in the second half of the 2-2 draw against Spurs earlier this month.

With many players in the Arsenal squad not performing anywhere near their best, Guendouzi has been one of the few who has stepped up his game.
