“Seriously Interested” Agent Names Arsenal As One Of Two Other Clubs Who Could Have Sealed 21.5M Transfer

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain were two of the other clubs keen on signing Atalanta fullback Timothy Castagne before he sealed a £21.5m switch to Leicester, according to agent George Gardi.

Gardi is partnered with Pini Zahavi, who worked on the deal that saw the Belgian make the move to the King Power Stadium, and asked about the interest in the player from other teams, he replied:

“There were several teams seriously interested in the player such as Arsenal and PSG, then the market combinations prevailed: Leicester, having made an important sale, were the first among the contenders to meet the demands of both Atalanta and the player.”

It’s not particularly surprising that the Gunners were looking at Castagne, considering that both Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Hector Bellerin have been linked with moves away from the Emirates in recent weeks.

Castagne played both as a left and a right wingback last campaign for Atalanta and, with head coach Mikel Arteta having utilised three at the back pretty regularly, he would have slotted in pretty easily.

However, with Maitland-Niles now expected to stay, after Wolves ended their interest in the 23-year-old, it was probably felt that signing another fullback was not required.
