Sanllehi Denies Arsenal Have Signed Up To European Super League Deal

Arsenal’s Director of Football Raul Sanllehi has denied reports that the club have agreed to join a European Super League.

A leaked document revealed that Arsenal, along with a host of top European clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City, were in discussions about a new continental competition.

Sanllehi says that the document is genuine, but it was likely a draft proposal which was not signed off by any club. When asked about the possible formation of the Super League, the Spaniard said it wasn’t going to happen, at least in the short or medium term:

“Not in the short term because we have an agreement with Uefa right now – but I don’t know what the future will bring because the future writes itself. But what I can assure you is we think the current situation is an optimal situation we are very proud to be in the Premier League.”

“By all means, it’s the best competition in the world and we want to be in the Champions League because we believe it’s the best continental competition in the world so that’s why we want to be involved.”

“But right now the situation – I don’t envision, in the short-term or medium-term, radical change.”

All European clubs have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with UEFA which has led to changes to the Champions League format. It meant that the top four European leagues received four places in the competition’s group stage.

However, the agreement expires in 2021, and Sanllehi is not ruling out something happening in three years time.
