Sagna – Will He Stay Or Will He Go?

Sagna – Will He Stay Or Will He Go?

French defender, Bacary Sagna who is 30 is in the last year of his contract and has not yet decided what to do with his career. With the team going so well talks about a contract renewal have not been a priority. Sagna is one of Arsenal’s most consistent players and has been with the club since 2007. He has managed 184 appearances and has been the main man for Wenger for a really long time. Even so he might leave the Emirates in order to make way for a younger player that could grow with the team composed mostly of youngsters that are under 25.

Sagna has had a good season and even managed to score. His great form is a bit unexpected after having to deal with career threatening injuries over recent seasons. The Frenchman had both his legs broken but still managed to recover. According to Metro he was offered a new contract during the summer but instead of signing he put negotiations on hold and he has managed to leave all that behind him and is looking better than ever at the beginning of this season. He has really developed a solid on-pitch relationship with the rest of the defenders and is clearly the number one choice for Wenger.

Because Sagna is 30 he will probably only receive a one year contract offer but you could certainly argue that he deserves at least a two year deal as he looks like he is back to his best. Wenger’s priority was to strengthen the attack by bringing in an attacking midfielder and a world class striker. After managing to sign Ozil, the Frenchman is still looking to find an efficient scorer similar to Higuain who joined Napoli instead of the Gunners. With that in mind it is more than likely that transferring a new defender will be put back at least until the 2015-2016 season so maybe extending Sagna is a good option.

It is mostly up to Sagna now to choose what he wants to do. He might just stick around for another year considering he has never won a trophy while working with Wenger. Hopefully the French international will stay away from injury and will contribute to ending Arsenal’s 8 year trophy-less streak.
