Atalanta captain Papu Gomez is not on Arsenal’s list of potential transfer targets for the January transfer window, according to the Guardian‘s Fabrizio Romano.
After freeing up a sizeable chunk of their wage bill following the departures of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Mesut Ozil, the Gunners are now able to make a move for an attacking midfielder and, while Norwich’s Emi Buendia is being considered, a move Gomez will not be pursued:
To be clear about Buendia. Arsenal appreciate the player and they had a contact with his agent weeks ago, but no official talks with Norwich. Still quiet. #AFC board have many options as ‘quality midfielder’ and will decide in the coming days. Papu Gomez is not in the list. ?

Gomez’s name hasn’t actually been associated with Arsenal before, so Romano’s decision to mention him is surprising, but a move for the 32-year-old would have made a lot of sense.
The Argentinian international has fallen out with his manager Gian Piero Gasperini and he is available this month. A short-term loan would have probably suited both parties as well.
Last season, Gomez was in scintillating form for Atalanta, providing a hugely impressive 18 assists. His creativity could have proved useful for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, but it seems they have decided to look at other options.
