REPORT: Arteta Has ‘Asked Arsenal’ To Sign 6 Cap Spanish International This Summer

Arsenal are considering making a move for Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon, according to La Razon.

The Spanish website reports that manager Mikel Arteta has “asked Arsenal” to make an attempt to sign the 23-year-old, who now has six caps at senior level for Spain.

There are other teams interested in Simon, though, with West Ham, Monaco and Borussia Dortmund all tracking the shot-stopper, but any deal will be complicated by the fact that the Spaniard does not have a release clause.

Just last summer, the Gunners paid Thomas Partey’s buyout fee to secure the Ghanaian’s services against the wishes of his club Atletico Madrid, but they will not be able to do that with Simon.

Bilbao are expected to hold out for a sizeable fee, with the keeper having recently established himself as Spain’s number one ahead of Manchester United’s David De Gea and Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga. We shall see whether Arsenal can find the funds necessary to snap him up.
