Pires Explains What Worries Him About Arsenal’s Summer Transfer Plans

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has questioned the Gunners’ ambition following reports of the London club’s transfer budget this summer.

It is believed manager Unai Emery may only have £40m to spend, before player sales, and Pires thinks that number is nowhere near enough to challenge at the top of the table:

“I read that Arsenal have a small envelope for transfers, only £40m. My opinion is that it isn’t enough. If you want to build a good team, you need to spend a lot of money, especially in the Premier League.”

“I respect Arsenal’s position and the owner, but everybody knows that if you want to win the Premier League, you need to spend a lot of money. All the top clubs want to sign great players, but if you want a great player it costs a lot of money.”

It must be said that the figure in question has only been speculated on, and it remains to be seen what Arsenal will do in terms of new signings.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a number of defenders and wingers this summer already who would cost a lot more than the budget the club could apparently afford.

There will, of course, be limitations on spending because of the lack of Champions League football next season, but the money received from Premier League TV rights should allow the team to have some flexibility in the transfer market.
