Petr Cech hands warning to Leno

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has handed new signing Bernd Leno with some advice as he heads into his first season with the club.

Leno will battle with Cech for the No.1 spot this season having made his £20m move to the Emirates from Bayer Leverkusen, and the latter has warned that adjusting to the Premier League is not as easy as it seems.

The Germany international started last week’s friendlies against Atletico Madrid and PSG, perhaps showing that Unai Emery will put him straight into the deep end as the club’s No.1. But Cech believes that the 26-year-old will need time to adjust to the Premier League.

“You have to play your game and you have to find your way through,” said Cech.

“There are so many things that a goalkeeper coming to the Premier League has not experienced in a different league.

“Obviously you have the physicality and the way the game is played in the Premier League.

“The goalkeeper is not as protected as in Europe or different leagues. So I think that is something you need to find your way and deal with and obviously the quicker you do it, it is better for you.”

Leno isn’t naive though, and despite his experience between the sticks he is still keen to learn as much as possible from Cech – a veteran of the game.

“Petr had a big career with many, many trophies and he’s still a big goalkeeper and a big personality.

“But I have to look at myself and play my game, work every day, very hard, to be the first choice of the coach.

“I will learn a lot working with him every day. He has big experience and played many games. I have a lot of experience too, but he has much more, so I can learn from him.

“He is a goalkeeper I admired when I was growing up. I can remember my first game in the Champions League, when I was 19, was against Petr. After the game he said it was a good game for me.

“It was seven years ago and now we are together at Arsenal, it’s crazy.”
