Pepe’s Arrival Leaves This Arsenal Starlet’s Future Very Much Up In The Air

The signing of Nicolas Pepe was met with delight by all Arsenal fans, but one person who may not be as pleased is Reiss Nelson whose chances of playing time will likely be reduced.

The 19-year-old’s favoured position is on the right-hand side, where the club’s new record signing will play most of his football for the Gunners this season.

Just before Pepe’s transfer was officially announced, Nelson gave a reminder to his manager Unai Emery about his quality by scoring in the 1-1 friendly draw against Angers on Wednesday night.

The teenager performed well in the channels and was composed with his finish when the ball came to him five minutes into the second half:

Nelson can, of course, play off the left flank as well, but with Gabriel Martinelli, Alex Iwobi, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the first choice front three of Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepe to contend with, things are looking very crowded for the England Under 21 international.

The winger had a decent spell at Hoffenheim last campaign, starting his loan like a house on fire with six goals and one assist in the league before the end of November.

However, injuries and a loss of form meant he could only manage one more goal in the Bundesliga before his season-long loan came to an end.

To continue his development, he really does need more game time, and with Pepe arriving, it does seem unlikely that Nelson will get the minutes he needs at the Emirates this campaign.

He has featured pretty regularly during preseason, but he hasn’t started as many friendlies as some fans would have expected, with Unai Emery having only selected him to start versus Fiorentina and Angers. It doesn’t bode well for when the Premier League season kicks off.

So, what does the future hold for Nelson? It’s difficult to read into Emery’s plans purely based on his pre-season selections but another loan spell looks the most likely outcome at the moment.

Ideally, you would want the winger playing regularly in the Premier League, but for such a loan to take place, it will need to be agreed quickly before August 8th.

He could go back to the Bundesliga, but a Championship club can’t be ruled out either. Nelson needs game time and if the 19-year-old can’t get that at the Gunners, another temporary switch is probably best for him to continue his development.
