Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes his former club should consider making an offer for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.
The Blues loaned out the Belgian just a year after signing the player for £97.5m but Merson thinks the forward could help increase the amount of goals that the Gunners score:
“I’m not having a go at Gabriel Jesus. He’s a very good player and he’s been a brilliant signing. But he’s not going to get you the goals you need on his own. The other day against Brighton, I don’t remember him ever looking like scoring. Romelu Lukaku might be available. The 30-year-old is an out-and-out centre-forward. He will stay up front and back into players. That might help Arsenal”
Lukaku will return from his loan spell at Inter Milan at the end of June but the 30-year-old is reportedly keen on staying in Italy so it would be a shock if he ended up making the move to the Emirates.
You also have to remember that the former Manchester United player has struggled with fitness problems this season, before his recent purple patch in front of goal over the past couple of months.
Do Arsenal need to sign a goalscorer?
The Gunners have scored 83 goals in the Premier League this campaign, despite not having a striker who has scored over 20.
It should be pointed out that it was problems at the other end of the pitch that led to the club’s title challenge collapsing. The focus for the summer transfer window will likely be on strengthening the defence and midfield, rather than recruiting a new no.9.
