Ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson believes his former club will run Manchester City “close” for the Premier League title once again but he still expects Pep Guardiola’s team to come out on top.
Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Merson said the Gunners’ chances could well be dependent on Declan Rice’s ability to quickly adapt to the club’s style of play:
“I can’t look past Manchester City for the Premier League title. With Gundogan gone and Kyle Walker on his way out, it might be difficult for them this season. Arsenal could give them a run for their money, but City’s bench is very strong. Declan Rice will need to get used to the way Arsenal. They move the ball around a lot faster than he’s used to at West Ham and England. Arsenal could get close.”
In terms of other potential contenders, Merson has played down the prospect of Liverpool or Chelsea being in the title race, while he says Manchester United’s participation relies on them landing a marquee signing:
“I don’t see Liverpool mounting a challenge at the moment. A lot depends on whether Manchester United can get Harry Kane. If they do, they’re massive challengers for the Premier League title. If they don’t, they’ll still be fighting for a place in the top four. I don’t think Chelsea will get into the top four.”
Merson may be underplaying Arsenal’s transfer business
The Gunners clearly have a stronger squad than last season. Jurrien Timber has looked very impressive in pre-season and there is every chance that Rice can slot in and make an impact straight away.
There are certainly more question marks over Kai Havertz but, even so, manager Mikel Arteta has more options available to him than last campaign, while City have not strengthened to anywhere near the same degree.
