Ozil wants to stay at Arsenal, says Wenger

Arsene Wenger has insisted that Mesut Ozil is keen to stay at Arsenal.

Ozil has been tipped to leave the Emirates for some time now, with his contract coming to and end and no indication he will renew. But Wenger has once again insisted that the German wants to stay at the club.

The 29-year-old is in fine form for Arsenal recently and scored a stunning volley as the Gunners beat Newcastle 1-0 on Saturday.

And although Ozil has been linked with a move to rivals Manchester United, Wenger has been quick to play down the rumours and remains determined that he not be sold in January.

“I believe he wants to stay, he is not to be convinced [to sign a new contract],” said Wenger.

“You want nobody to leave and you see where we stand on that. But at the moment, it’s very difficult.

“Until the end of the season we know what it is, but after that, I cannot tell you.”

Wenger also spoke about Ozil’s on the field performances, saying he thinks the No.11 is now playing the best football he has seen since he moved to north London from Madrid four years ago.

“Yes, certainly,” he replied when asked if Ozil was currently in his best run of form for Arsenal.

“I think he takes responsibility and that’s what you want from him. He is more mature, he guides the team very well, he does a lot on the ball and your heart rate always goes down when he has the ball.

“I would say more important is the quality and the influence he has on the collective game, rather than his goal.

“You cannot wait to score a goal like that every week, but you can play like he plays usually every week. That is more important. If he adds that to his game, it’s even more important.”
