Ozil thanks Gunners fans for their ‘love’ following tough summer

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has endured an extremely tough summer. The German found himself at the centre of much controversy when he was pictured with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan just before the World Cup.

Then, after Germany’s calamitous exit at the group stage, the star was made into some sort of scapegoat – being battered by German officials and fans who labelled him a disgrace, amongst other things.

But Ozil has been quick to thank Arsenal fans for all their love and support during the difficult period, which saw him announce his retirement from international football.

Ozil was on the bench during Arsenal’s penalty shoot-out defeat to Atletico Madrid in the International Champions on Thursday, but received a huge cheer when his image was flashed up on the big screen.

Tweeting from his personal account, Ozil said: “Thanks to the Gunners in Singapore for showing so much love tonight.”

Arsenal’s players have also been quick in their attempts to show Ozil support, and Mkhitaryan insisted the club acts as a sort of family to each other.

“Of course everybody supports Mesut. We’re with him, we’re trying to help him,” said Mkhitaryan.

“Everyone knows that Arsenal is a team with a lot of foreign players and foreign employees. It doesn’t matter which country you represent, it’s like family and we support each other.”
