Ozil Deal Proves Intent – Walcott

The German international signed a 5 year long deal with Arsenal and the fee was reportedly £42.4 million on transfer deadline day. This piece of astute business by the Gunners smashed their transfer record by more than twice the amount as they finally landed a marquee signing that Wenger was so desperate for.

After missing out on the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez, it seemed another weak window was on the cards for the Gunners who previously have had to endure their star players depart the Emirates due to a perceived lack of ambition by Wenger.

It was turning out to be another sour window with the club’s new-found financial firepower failing to materialize. However, out of the blue, Wenger has shown us that there is still some ambition left in him as he displayed their financial muscle in the market by the signing of Ozil, who is widely known for his assisting ability.

The 24-year-old is the joint-highest assist provider in Europe over the last two years along with Lionel Messi. In fact, Ozil has provided a staggering 94 assists over the past three seasons for club and country.

A capture of this magnitude is not usual for Wenger, who relies on buying young talent and nurturing them for the future. However, a lack of trophies coupled with the possibility of a fans backlash has made Wenger ditch his youth policy for proven quality.

England international Walcott believes that such signings are necessary to boost all the players. He feels that the club have issued a major statement of intent for the current season by signing one of Europe’s top quality players.

According to Yahoo! Eurosport, he said, “It definitely shows a statement that we are ready to step up. We had a disappointing start to the season, but we have bounced back and it is looking fantastic now. With the likes of Ozil joining the club, it is only going to boost everyone.”

Ozil had initially announced that he would stay with the Spanish club but decided to leave once he felt like he was not really being appreciated at the club. The arrival of Bale meant he slipped down the pecking order and he felt he needed a fresh challenge.

He said, “At the weekend, I was certain that I would stay at Real Madrid, but afterwards I realised that I did not have the faith from the coach or the bosses. I am a player who needs this faith and that is what I have felt from Arsenal, which is why I have joined.”
