Ozil Capture A Sign Of Things To Come For Arsenal?

Arsenal were not considered as the front-runners for the league title in the last few years, nor were they expected to make a big impact this time around. That is a fact. The London club were approaching a disappointing and a potentially calamitous summer, given the lack of any activity after announcing a massive £70 million transfer kitty at the beginning of the summer.

What began with a load of promise for the Gunners faithful, they were quickly heading towards the possibility of ending the summer with just two free transfers to show for in the form of Mathieu Flamini and Yaya Sanogo. That bothered the fans particularly because they were earlier being linked to the likes of big name players like Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Wayne Rooney; and now had only Flamini and Sanogo to show for their efforts.

As we approached closer to the Deadline Day, manager Arsene Wenger sensed the implications it could have if he did not bring in a marquee signing, and hence made some quick advances. He gave some news away when he spoke after the win against Tottenham by saying that “he might have a surprise for the fans”. Next day itself, the capture of Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil was announced for a club record breaking £42.4 million, as reported by Yahoo! EuroSport.

The entire footballing world was taken by surprise at this deal. Not only did it leave the Arsenal fans and players ecstatic, it also brought forward a broad question in perspective. What does this transfer mean for Arsenal?

Firstly, Wenger proved that he was right all the way when he said that he was ready to spend big amounts of money for a world class player. Next, this deal throws open the doors for further big name players to arrive at the Emirates Stadium; and finally, will the addition of Ozil add some massive firepower to the attack and perhaps help them mount a sustainable challenge for honors?

Only time will tell, but looking at the mood and celebrations at the club one cannot be blamed for thinking so.
