Oxlade-Chamberlain Ready To Step Up For England

The 19-year-old Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has had a mixed second season with the Gunners, scoring just two goals in all competitions for the North London club. However, with the season over, Oxlade-Chamberlain is concentrating all his efforts on aiding England’s quest to reach Brazil next year, after Arsenal successfully secured Champions League football on the final day of the season.

The teenager is one of the many players under the age of 23 in the squad under coach Roy Hodgson, who is overseeing a transitional period in the England camp. Frank Lampard recently admitted that England’s golden generation failed to live up to their potential, and the Three Lions’ young guns have a chance to outshine their much-hyped predecessors.

In fact, players like Oxlade-Chamberlain already have experience of playing in a major international tournament like the Euro 2012, which will definitely stand them in good stead for the future. Chamberlain and his teammates would need all the experience to qualify out of a tough group which includes Montenegro, who have a chance of opening up a five-point lead over England before they get a chance to play in September.

The pacy winger spoke about the challenges he faces during the international fixtures, and admitted that England will need to be at their best if they want to qualify for the World Cup. He also provided an insight into training with the squad and whether he gets along with the non-Arsenal players.

According to Dailymail, he said, “This is my first campaign as an England international, so I’ve seen how demanding it is, how challenging. You think it lasts only so long but is so stretched out. You have to keep your motives as they were every time you meet up.”

He added, “That in itself can be a real challenge but the manager gets our heads together really well and drills into us what he wants. As soon as we’re back they just need to say a few things and we’re all on the same page. The sooner everyone is singing off the same hymn sheet, it stands us in good stead going into games.”

“It’s been that way, but Montenegro have shown how special it is to get to major tournaments. It isn’t going to be a walk in the park, even for a nation like ourselves. We knew that we would have to raise it for tough games, tough environments, different conditions, you have to be switched on 100 per cent all the time.”

“What helps me personally is that I have a lot of friends from the other clubs as well as the Arsenal boys. When I go away it’s good to be with the likes of Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge. Even the experienced stars I can count as friends. That is one of the really good things is that there is a really good bunch, youthful lads mixed well with senior players – everyone helps each other out, and the vibe is really good with us all.”

The England squad is scheduled to meet up this week to prepare for two season-ending friendlies against Ireland and Brazil. If given a chance, Oxlade-Chamberlain will be eager to impress Hodgson in order to push for a starting spot in next year’s World Cup.
