Ornstein And McNicholas Reveal Why Lacazette Is Running Down His Contract And How It Could Be Resolved

Arsenal are not willing to give Alexandre Lacazette a long-term contract, according to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein and James McNicholas.

The two journalists, who are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the Gunners, claim that the Frenchman is currently running down his current deal as the club are only prepared to give him a short-term extension.

Lacazette will be 31 in May and Arsenal are very reluctant to hand out a lucrative new contract, which is unsurprising considering they have been burned by such agreements in the past (i.e Mesut Ozil).

The Gunners’ hierarchy “do not rule out” the possibility of the Frenchman remaining at the Emirates beyond next summer but it seems the only way he will stay is if he accepts that he won’t be given a lengthy extension.

Lacazette remains a very influential figure in the dressing room and he is committed to the cause, having impressed Arteta both in training and in matches. It appears he is trying to win around his employers by proving to them that he is worth keeping with his performances on the pitch.
