‘Only Had One Good Season’ BBC Pundit Slams Arsenal’s Big Summer Signing

BBC pundit Danny Murphy has questioned Arsenal’s decision to splash out £70m on Nicolas Pepe in the summer. The Ivorian has struggled to make an impact since arriving from Lille and was a substitute against Southampton at the weekend.

Speaking about the club’s poor recruitment, Murphy asked why the Gunners decided to prioritise another forward when they already have Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang:

“Recruitment is poor. They went and spent £70million on a winger who only had one good season. They didn’t need any attacking players as [they] had two of the best strikers in Europe.”

To be fair to Pepe, the 24-year-old has shown his abilities over more than one season. After scoring 14 goals in the 2018/19 season, he then went on to bag 23 last year.

The Ivorian international has demonstrated flashes of inspiration since his arrival, such as his two free-kicks against Vitoria in the 3-2 win last month, but those moments have been few and far between so far.

Arsenal supporters will be hoping that he can settle into the Premier League and provide some key contributions as the season wears on.
