Arsenal Goalkeeper Norberto Neto

Norberto Neto joined Arsenal in the summer of 2024 on loan from Premier League rivals Bournemouth to be the backup goalkeeper to David Raya.

The 35-year-old was in replacement of Aaron Ramsdale who left for Southampton in order to get more consistent game time, after Mikel Arteta decided David Raya was his first choice.

His loan spell at the Emirates will last until June 2025 when he will return to Bournemouth where he is under contract until June and become a free agent.

Neto is yet to make an appearance for the Gunners as he will likely play in rotated cup matches or if there is an injury to David Raya.

Neto’s career before Arsenal

The 35-year-old began his career in 2009 with Club Athletico Paranaense in Brazil which is where he was born. He came through the academy and made 42 appearances and 15 clean sheets before being scouted by Serie A side Fiorentina.

He moved to Italy in 2011 and spent four seasons with Fiorentina where he made 101 appearances, his most for any single club. However, despite his success, Neto was unable to win anything with Fiorentina so moved to Juventus in 2015 on a free transfer.

The Brazilian spent two seasons at Juventus making just 22 appearances as he was the backup to Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon. Neto then moved to Spain and played for Valencia as their first-choice keeper between 2017 and 2019.

After 80 appearances with Valencia, Neto made his biggest money move of his career as he was sold to Barcelona for a fee of £21.8. He was at the Nou Camp for two seasons where he made 21 appearances as backup to Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Neto then moved to the Premier League in 2022 on a free transfer to Bournemouth at the age of 33. He has since made 63 appearances and 13 clean sheets.

Neto represented Brazil at the Olympics

The 35-year-old doesn’t just have one international cap to his name, the goalkeeper also has two appearances for the Brazil Olympic Football team at the London 2012 games.

He played twice and the team won both of the games that the Arsenal keeper started in goal.

Three things you didn’t know about Norberto Neto

Neto’s experience doesn’t just come in the form of playing in goal, the Brazilian was also captain at Bournemouth during his time at the club.

Due to his roles at Barcelona and Juventus, the list of players to play alongside Neto is impressive. The 35-year-old has played with Lionel Messi, Neymar, Mohammed Salah, Giorgio Chiellini, Luiz Suarez and more.

He always dreamt of playing in the Premier League as a child and always wanted to move to the UK. He said when he first moved to Bournemouth: “When I was a young guy, my dream was always to be here.”
