Nicholas Backs Arsenal To Make Three Signings Totalling £70m

Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas believes the club must sign three defenders this summer if they are to improve their squad.

Although he thinks the Gunners could do without signing another right-back, with Hector Bellerin currently first choice, he feels the rest of the backline will need to be recruited.

Nicholas says the London club will have to shell out quite a lot of money to fix their defensive issues:

“We need a whole new defence, and I mean the back four. Probably if Bellerin fit then that’s fine. We’ve got a couple of young players to come back, Rob Holding being one of them.”

“But that will be squad-orientated, we probably need three main defenders to come in. That’s going to cost the best part of £60m or £70m.”

It appears that £25m will be spent on at least one defender. Multiple reports suggest that Arsenal are in talks with Saint-Etienne over signing teenage centre-back William Saliba.

There had been claims in France that a provisional five-year contract had been agreed with the 18-year-old, but it is believed that negotiations have not gone that far.

Due to Saliba’s age, it is likely that the Gunners will want to recruit a more experienced centre-back beside him, whilst also strengthening the left-hand side.
