AZ Alkmaar captain Teun Koopmeiners has rejected an offer from Arsenal in favour of a switch to Atalanta, according to the Corriere Di Bergamo (via TuttoAtalanta.com).
Both the Gunners and Roma were after the Dutch international but the Italian newspaper claims he turned down both teams as he wants to play Champions League football next season.
Atalanta finished third in the Serie A table last campaign and will be in Europe’s premier competition so it appears Koopmeiners has made his decision purely on that basis.
The 23-year-old had an excellent season for AZ, hitting the back of the net 17 times, as well as providing seven assists in all competitions, although a significant number of those goals came from the penalty spot.
It is another blow for Arsenal, who recently missed out on Norwich’s Emi Buendia to Aston Villa. It seems they have already moved on from Koopmeiners, though, with reports suggesting they are interested in Wolves’ Ruben Neves.
