Mesut Ozil Still Key To Arsenal’s Season

In the recent run of poor results at Arsenal, the vast majority of anger from the fans has been aimed at manager Arsene Wenger, with his position in more doubt than it’s ever been.

Whilst the debate over whether or not the Frenchman, who has been in charge at the club for over two decades, should put pen to paper on the two year deal which is being offered will continue to rumble on, another must be addressed.

The criticism from fans has not been solely reserved for the man in the hot seat. German playmaker Mesut Ozil, who at times as a Gunners player can do no wrong, has been held up as a scapegoat for many of the substandard performances, having been criticised for not working as hard as those around him, whilst also bargaining for a huge pay rise with any new deal.

Many fans have claimed that the former Read Madrid man, who arrived at The Emirates for £42m when he moved from the Spanish capital, must be doing more to earn his new big-money deal.

Whilst fellow star man Alexis Sanchez, who is also chasing a much bigger pay-packet, continues to work hard despite results, in chasing down lost causes and tracking back, the Germany international is seen as a luxury by many fans.

However, while it is true he does not track back and put in as big a defensive shift as those around his, going forward his play is invaluable to Arsene Wenger.

The World Cup winner has created more chances than any player in the Premier League since he arrived from La Liga in 2013, as well as picking up more assists than any other rival, furthermore, he ranks among the highest players for completing passes in the opposition half this season, with a success rate of 85.41%, having completed a total of 954.

His work rate may be flagging a little, but every side has players who do not necessarily bomb around the pitch at full pelt for ninety minutes, but when called upon will find that crucial pass or produce something no one else in the side is capable of.

There are far more problems in the current Arsenal setup than Mesut Ozil. Aaron Ramsey has admitted that the players have let their manager down this season, they may also be letting their star man down.

Should the performances of those around him begin to pick up, starting at Liverpool this weekend, Ozil can once again slot in and will be back to his awe inspiring best.
