Merson Says He’s “Shocked” At City Decision That Could Help Arsenal’s Title Ambitions

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson says he’s surprised by Manchester City‘s decision to loan out Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich.

The Portuguese international joined the Bundesliga champions just before the transfer window closed, with the German club having the option to buy the player for €70m (£62m). Asked about the implications the decision will have, Merson replied:

“I was shocked. I was very shocked. I would say so [Arsenal will enjoy it], I’m a big fan of his. It just shows how quickly football can change.”

What is even more surprising is that City chose not to replace Cancelo. While youngster Rico Lewis has certainly taken the chances he has been offered by manager Pep Guardiola, it’s clear that the Citizens’ squad is now weaker.

In particular, their options at left-back are rather thin. Centre-back Nathan Ake has been filling in, while summer signing Sergio Gomez has not been trusted to start in big matches.

All in all then, Arsenal should be delighted that their title rivals have decided to dispense with Cancelo’s services without seeking any sort of replacement.
