Merson Questions Why “Excellent” Everton Signing Wasn’t On Arsenal’s Radar

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes Everton midfielder Fabian Delph should have been a target for Gunners in the summer. The England international joined Everton from Manchester City for just £8m in July.

Speaking about the 29-year-old, Merson feels he has more talent than the three central midfielders that started for Arsenal in the North London derby:

“I look at him and wonder why Arsenal didn’t sign him. He is better than the midfield three that played against Tottenham. He could have played at left-back instead of Kolasinac on Sunday. I am a big fan of Delph. He can play in certain positions and is an excellent signing for Everton.”

It certainly could be argued that Delph is a better player than Granit Xhaka, but I doubt many Gunners fans would agree with Merson that the England midfielder is better than either Matteo Guendouzi or Lucas Torreira.

Robert Pires praised Guendouzi for his standout display in the derby, having provided the assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s equaliser.

Delph meanwhile has a pretty terrible injury record compared to those in Arsenal’s midfield, having been sidelined with numerous knee and muscular injuries over the past few seasons. He managed just 89 appearances for City despite spending four years with the Manchester club.
