Paul Merson has listed Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard in his top five Premier League midfielders based on current form.
The Norwegian international has had a good start to the season, and speaking about his decision to include the 23-year-old, Merson says he rates him higher than some other high-profile players:
“I like Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Phil Foden and the likes, but Odegaard is someone who has already made a massive impact this season. He plays in a position where he has to make things happen and he’s done just that as Arsenal find themselves at the top of the Premier League table with 18 points from seven games.”
Odegaard has definitely pushed on to another level at the beginning of this campaign. He has scored three goals in his first six league appearances for the Gunners which is an excellent return, considering he only bagged seven in the whole of last season.
The initial £30m they paid for the playmaker is now looking like an absolute bargain. As Merson mentions, he is definitely performing better than the likes of Mount and Fernandes at the moment, although some may dispute his suggestion that he is also superior to Foden. We shall see if he can continue this form in the coming weeks and months.
