Former Arsenal star Paul Merson can’t see the Gunners getting a result against Liverpool this evening.
The TV pundit sees the Reds’ defence as the key factor in the clash at Anfield, with Arsenal not having enough quality to deal with the Premier League leaders:
“The juggernaut will roll on here. Even when they [Liverpool] play games like the other day against Newcastle they still don’t let in a goal. Arsenal’s strengths are scoring goals, but they are coming up against a really, really good defence.”
“Look at Man Utd the other day, they are strolling at 3-0 and end up winning 3-1 – it counts in the end. This Liverpool team are just getting clean sheet after clean sheet. Arsenal’s Achilles’ heel is at the back, and with Liverpool’s firepower, they will score goals.”
Merson has gone for a 3-0 scoreline and a comfortable win for the home side. Such a prediction is unsurprising considering his recent comments about the Gunners’ tendency to go a goal down in matches.
He believes that Liverpool’s backline will not be as porous some other opponents. After all, Jurgen Klopp’s side has only conceded seven goals in 19 league games so far this campaign.
If Arsenal are going to get a result at Anfield, then, the defence will have to be more solid than it has been in recent weeks. A performance comparable to the 1-1 draw at the Emirates back in November will certainly be required.
