TV pundit Paul Merson is expecting a much-changed Arsenal side for this afternoon’s game against Burnley.
Unai Emery’s team have very little riding on the match with Champions League qualification through the league looking very unlikely.
Merson believes the Gunners head coach will select a team of squad players and youngsters as he prepares for the Europa League final against Chelsea:
“There’s no point putting out a first-choice team and they’ll not get back from Spain until late, and we could see a lot of players we’ve rarely seen in an Arsenal shirt before.”
The ex-Arsenal midfielder predicts a 2-1 win for Burnley; an outcome which wouldn’t surprise any Gunners supporter.
The small gap between the semi-final against Valencia and the last Premier League fixture makes it almost impossible to pick the same team anyway.
With the additional factor that there is not much resting on the game, apart from pride, preventing key players from getting injuries ahead of a major European final seems the most sensible approach.
The fact that it also offers the chance to blood a number of youngsters in the first team is also another benefit.
