TV pundit Paul Merson believes that Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale would be the perfect fit for Arsenal.

The ex-Gunners star thinks the 29-year-old has few options available to him this summer if he leaves the Bernabeu, with Manchester United the only other realistic destination in the Premier League.

Merson says Bale could be the ideal replacement for Mesut Ozil, but getting the Welshman to sign for the London club could still prove to be a challenge:

“I think he suits Arsenal down to the ground as well. If they could get him in and get Mesut Ozil out they’ve had a big result.”

“But would he be interested in Arsenal? Would he want to join them? They’re miles away from winning the title and it would not go down well with Spurs fans.”

Bale signing for Arsenal after his previous association with Spurs would be hugely controversial. In addition, the winger could prove to be well outside the club’s price range.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Gunners may only have £40m to spend this summer, although they have been linked to other players, who are worth well beyond that amount.

Bale is said to be happy at Real Madrid, but he could well be a casualty of the Spanish club’s major squad overhaul at the end of the season.
