Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has likened Arsenal target Dominik Szoboszlai to Chelsea attacking midfielder Kai Havertz.
The Gunners are said to be tracking the Hungarian international, along with AC Milan, Real Madrid, Napoli and RB Leipzig but, due to his €25m (£22m) release clause, he could cost substantially less than the German.
Matthaus was speaking on Hungary’s qualification for the European Championships next summer when he praised Szoboszlai and predicted that the 20-year-old has a very bright future in the game:
“There is Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored the decisive goal against Iceland [in the Euro 2020 qualifers]. He’s a gem, a guy like Kai Havertz. In Hungary, he is already being compared to the great Ferenc Puskas. A really great player who sometimes acts in the centre and sometimes comes from the flank. He could move to RB Leipzig in January, but I’m convinced that every top European club has him on the list, including FC Bayern.”
Arsenal are in desperate need of a playmaker and Szoboszlai has been on the London club’s radar for well over a year. His agent has already spoken out to say the player could be on the move when the January transfer window opens so the Gunners may have to move fast if they want to land the talented midfielder.
The Hungarian is believed to be looking for first-team football straight away if he moves so that should give Mikel Arteta’s side an advantage over other teams.
