Looking At Emery’s First Arsenal Season From The Punter’s Point Of View

Arsenal enjoyed a decent enough start to life under new boss Unai Emery even though they lost their first 2 games of the season at home to Man City and away to Chelsea. The Gunners then reeled off 11 straight wins in all competitions including 7 Premier League wins.

To get a barometer of how the Gunners would have delivered to punters who bet on them, Betway compiled the data below by seeing how Arsenal would have paid off if you had placed a £10 bet on them to win every game, draw every game or lose every game of the League campaign.

As it turns out you would have lost £13 betting on winning every game, you’d have lost £96 wagering on drawing every game and you would have also lost £91 by betting on Arsenal losing every game. So the Gunners were not a good bet based on these parameters.

Along with these statistics the following were the best betting results: from the most profitable win – £20 returns from backing Arsenal to beat Chelsea at home in game 23 of the season; from the most profitable draw – £43 winnings from betting Arsenal to draw with Brighton in game 37 when the Seagulls were desperately looking for points to avoid relegation; and finally from the most profitable loss – £51 would have been your returns from backing Arsenal to lose to Crystal Palace in game 34 of the League campaign which is not a surprise when you consider that Palace are the Premier League’s away specialists.

Palace only won 5 games at home, drawing 5 and losing 9 games at Selhurst Park, a record which would have seen them relegated. It was the exact opposite for Arsenal as they won 14 games, drew 3 and only lost 2 games at home – a record which would have seen them finish in 3rd place in the Premier League.

You can see how other Premier League teams did for punters using the same barometer as already described in the video clip above.

So it’s clear Arsenal need to improve their away form in particular but their defence needs to be improved as conceding goals was their achilles heel. Unai Emery will be hoping to hang on to Laurent Koscielny this summer despite serious interest in signing the Arsenal captain as well as being very optimistic that youngster Rob Holding can return from his injury in the type of excellent form he was displaying before he was sidelined for the season.
