London Rivals To Fight For FA Cup Hero

Wigan’s James McCarthy has had a breakthrough season for the relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic, as he has been showered with praise by many over the course of the season for his excellent performances. The impressive performances of McCarthy throughout the season culminated into one virtuoso display from the middle of the park in the FA Cup final, as he powered his Wigan side to a miraculous victory over heavy favorites Manchester City defying all the odds and causing a major upset.

The 22-year old’s contributions to the dramatic victory on Saturday have not gone unnoticed by any stretch, as he has already slipped onto the radar of Tottenham, who are reportedly keen to bring him to White Hart Lane next season.

However, DailyMail believes that standing in their way are their arch rivals Arsenal, who too have been credited with an interest in recent weeks. The industrious midfielder has impressed Arsene Wenger of late and the Frenchman has shortlisted him as a possible summer acquisition.

Following the departure of Alex Song last year, Arsenal have been short of options in the defensive midfield department, and as a result they have had to deploy current skipper Mikel Arteta out of position. Though the Spaniard has somewhat settled into his new role, the Gunners are short in depth in that department. They currently play either Arteta, Aaron Ramsey or Jack Wilshere in those two midfield positions. Abou Diaby is injured more often than not, and Francis Coquelin still needs a while to get into the first team regularly.

Therefore, Wenger’s interest in the Republic of Ireland star seems justified as he looks to strengthen his midfield by adding some much needed steel, in an attempt to finally bring Arsenal back to their winning ways.
