Leno not fazed by lack of opportunities so far

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has insisted that he will be given his chance to shine between the sticks this season, after surprisingly being left out of the starting XI for all the Gunners’ games this season.

The goalkeeper signed for Arsenal this summer in a £22.5m deal from Bayer Leverkusen. He was expected to jump straight in goal ahead of veteran Petr Cech, whose form had been questionable over the last few seasons. But that has not been the case so far, with the German yet to make an appearance so far this season.

Cech had a disastrous game on the opening day of the season against Man City, almost scoring an own goal as the Gunners suffered a 2-0 defeat.

But Emery stood by the Czech legend, keeping him in goal against both Chelsea and West Ham in their next two games. That seems to have paid off, with Cech making more saves than any other Premier League goalkeeper so far this season with 18.

However, Leno insists he is not concerned by his lack of chances so far, stating in an interview with Sport Bild that his time will come

“I am convinced that my change was the right decision,” Leno said. “I’m not crazy.

“It may take a few weeks or months, but my time here will come.”

Emery has previously explained why he has left Leno out this season, saying that there will be chances for everyone in the squad to prove themselves.

“We want the competition with the goalkeeper and also every player in the squad,” said the Arsenal boss.

“The position is the same. The same chances for all the goalkeepers.

“Petr Cech had a very good pre-season. He has experience of continuing to defend our goal.

“Leno is [just] starting with us, he is working very well and also played very good in pre-season. He can wait his moment.”
